What is a smart meter?

Smart meters are small electronic devices that let you better track your energy consumption. Taking stock of how much electricity you’re using per hour, they feed the information back to us to provide accurate billing.

At the same time, smart meters allow you to understand how much energy you’re using. Installed in your home along with an In-Home Display (IHD), you can see how much your gas and electricity usage is costing you as and when you use it.

How smart meters work

The smart meter system directly records the energy use from your mains supply and sends the data to your In-Home Display. It also sends this data to us via the communications hub over a mobile network.

The smart meter system comes in four parts:

  1. Electric meter: This checks how much electricity you’re using every 10 seconds.
  2. Gas meter: This records your gas usage and sends data every 30 minutes.
  3. Communications hub: This sends your usage report to your in-home display and directly to us.
  4. In-Home Display: This shows how much energy you’re using and exactly what it’s costing you.

Smart meters make your life easier

Providing to-the-minute reports on your energy usage, you can wave goodbye to estimated bills. We’ll both know exactly how much energy you’re using so we can bill you exactly.

That means no more annoying meter readings too.

Plus, by keeping an eye on your In-Home Display, you’ll be able to notice spikes in usage and hopefully find ways to save money on your energy bills.

It’s all part of the way we can move towards a smarter, more energy efficient United Kingdom.

Do I need a smart meter?

It’s completely up to you if you want to install a smart meter in your home, but we do encourage it. That’s because we now use more electronic devices than ever before, and using the smart meter to monitor your usage can help avoid wasted energy and unnecessary bills.

The best thing about it? They’re completely free of charge, and are backed by the UK Government's initiative to cut carbon emissions by 2020. Installation of your smart meter comes with specific governmental standards. The Smart Meter Installation Code of Practice (SMICoP - which you can find here) specifies the minimum standards for Smart Meter providers to follow in relation to the Customer facing aspects of the installation of Smart Metering Systems.
